Ankle pain

You know that feeling when your ankle gives way while walking on uneven ground? One moment you’re fine, next moment you’re limping. If this happens to you often, you’re not alone.

Many people deal with weak ankles. The thing is, once you twist your ankle badly, it becomes easier to twist it again. It’s like your ankle loses its memory of how to stay stable.

Why Does It Keep Happening?

When you sprain your ankle, the ligaments get stretched. These are like rubber bands that hold your ankle bones together. After an injury, they become loose and don’t support your ankle as well as before.

Your ankle also has small sensors that tell your brain where your foot is. After a sprain, these sensors don’t work properly. So your body reacts slower when you step on something uneven.

Walking on flat surfaces feels fine. But stairs, rocky paths, or even small bumps can make your ankle twist again.

What Can You Do About It?

The good news is you can make your ankle stronger. It takes some time, but it works.

Balance exercises help a lot. Try standing on one leg while brushing your teeth. Start by holding something for support. As you get better, let go. This trains those sensors in your ankle.

Strengthening matters too. Simple exercises like pointing your toes up and down, or drawing circles with your foot can build muscle around your ankle. Do these daily, even when watching TV.

Wear proper shoes. Flip-flops and worn-out shoes don’t give your ankle enough support. Get shoes with good grip and ankle support, especially for exercise.

Many physiotherapists suggest doing heel raises. Stand flat, then push up on your toes. Come down slowly. This makes the muscles around your ankle stronger.

When Should You Get Help?

If your ankle keeps twisting despite trying these exercises, see a physiotherapist. They can check what’s actually wrong and give you specific exercises.

Sometimes you need a proper assessment to understand if there’s more damage than you think.

Your ankle won’t fix itself just by waiting. You need to actively work on making it stronger. Start small, stay consistent, and your ankle will thank you.
